Quote: “G. G. Rushby, a game warden doing “elephant control work” in Tanzania (then Tanganyika), saw three female elephants and a half grown male in the tall grass. Since his job was to keep the population down, he shot the females and slightly wounded the half grown animal.” Comment: Once again the human populations believes that killing animals is in some way right. For example here, three elephants are killed for “population control”. Who said that us humans are the ones to decide how many elephants are to live? Maybe, yes, the elephants could overgrown in population and overtime take over and extinct another species but it’s not up to us to decide if either the elephants or that species lives. But then again, people like scientist don’t believe that animals have such human emotions. Many times we take things for granted and don’t realize what someone else is going through. For example, because of scientific researched animals lives were being taken. I feel as if this is not right and if a population is over growing and taken over other things the decision of stopping that is not ours to make. Connections: For example, one time at home we had a bunch of flies flying around the house. My mom wanted to kill them so they wouldn't come into the house. But not long after a spider build a spider web right outside and started catching the flies and so there were not as many flies flying around. If we had killed the flies then the spider wouldn't have enough food to survive and then would die off too. Nature is something very complicated and very difficult. I feel as if the spiders kill all the flies and flies go extinct then they will go extinct. It is not our fault or our business to interact and change the course of said action. That’s why i think that humans may be endangering species and damaging the world, because they care and change things that they shouldn't. Questions:

  • Why did we choose to keep a “population control” on species other than humans?

  • If one population is growing too fast and killing another, how do we decide which one to keep?
